Q6(c)(ii). Bohr effect; role of cytochrome P450
What is the Bohr effect? Explain the role of cytochrome P450.
Answer in brief
Bohr effect: the affinity of haemoglobin for O₂ falls as pH falls or CO₂ rises, so more oxygen is released in working tissue; cytochrome P450 is a haem enzyme that puts one O atom of O₂ into a C–H bond of a substrate and reduces the other to water.
