UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist, Mains · 2018 · Mains Paper I
Q1(b). Coordination nomenclature
Question
Write IUPAC nomenclature of the following coordination compounds: (i) [CoCl(CN)(NO₂)(NH₃)₃] (ii) [Pt(Py)₄][PtCl₄].
Answer in brief
(i) Triamminechloridocyanido(nitrito-κ N)cobalt(III). (ii) Tetrakis(pyridine)platinum(II) tetrachloridoplatinate(II).
Key points
- In (i), chlorido, cyanido and nitrito each carry -1 charge; ammonia is neutral. The neutral complex therefore contains Co(III).
- List ligand names alphabetically, ignoring multiplicative prefixes. The formula NO₂ is conventionally read as N-bound nitrite (traditional name nitro); ONO would specify O-bound nitrite.
- In (ii), four neutral pyridine ligands surround Pt(II) in the cation.
