Sketch the splitting of d-orbitals in [Ni(CN)₄]²⁻ ion. Comment on the magnetic behaviour of the complex.

The strong-field square-planar d⁸ complex has an empty high-energy d_(x²-y²) orbital and four doubly occupied lower orbitals, so it is diamagnetic.
