Q11(b). Using magnetism to distinguish spin states
How is magnetic data useful to distinguish between strong field and weak field octahedral complexes of d¹ to d⁹ metals?
Answer in brief
Spin-only moments distinguish high- and low-spin octahedral d⁴–d⁷ configurations. For d¹–d³ and d⁸–d⁹, the unpaired-electron counts are the same in both field regimes.
