Q6(c). Aldehyde electrophilicity
Question
Why is acetaldehyde more reactive than benzaldehyde toward nucleophilic addition?
Answer in brief
Phenyl conjugation stabilises benzaldehyde and reduces its carbonyl electrophilicity; the phenyl group also gives greater steric hindrance.
