Q6(e). Cyclopentadiene with maleic anhydride: endo and exo adducts
The reaction of cyclopentadiene with maleic anhydride on heating can form two possible products, but only one is formed in major quantity. Write the structure of the two products and give suitable explanation.
Answer in brief
The two products are the endo and exo adducts, both C₉H₈O₃; the endo adduct is the major product (endo rule, kinetic control).
