Q6(b). The sodium–potassium pump
Differentiate between active transport and passive transport through the cell membrane. What type of transport occurs in the Na⁺–K⁺ pump? How does this pump function? Explain with mechanism.
Answer in brief
The Na⁺/K⁺ ATPase performs primary active transport: one ATP drives three Na⁺ ions out of the cell and two K⁺ ions into it against their electrochemical gradients.
