Q6(c)(i). Octahedral and tetrahedral splitting
Draw the crystal field splitting diagram of d-orbitals in octahedral and tetrahedral fields. In which case would the energy difference (Δ) between the two states be lower? Why would it be so?
Answer in brief
Tetrahedral splitting is smaller: for the same metal, ligands and metal–ligand distance, Δt ≈ (4/9)Δo, and the ordering is reversed.
