Q5(d). Oxidation of 2-acetylpyridine
2-Acetylpyridine is treated with SeO₂ to give X, then 50% KOH to give Y. Identify X and Y and give their mechanisms.
Answer in brief
X is pyridin-2-ylglyoxal, 2-PyCOCHO; Y is potassium 2-hydroxy-2-(pyridin-2-yl)acetate, giving the corresponding acid after acidification.
