Q5(f). Nitration of indole
Can indole be nitrated with concentrated HNO₃/H₂SO₄? If not, give an appropriate nitration reaction and example.
Answer in brief
The strongly acidic oxidizing mixture is unsuitable for clean indole nitration; benzoyl nitrate gives a 3-nitro derivative, although side reactions can lower the yield.
