Q7(d). Electronic spectrum of [Ni(OS(CH₃)₂)₆]²⁺
Nickel was found to be coordinated through oxygen in the [Ni(OS(CH₃)₂)₆]²⁺ complex ion, as shown by its UV-visible spectrum. Predict theoretically the number of peaks and assign them to the corresponding electronic transitions.
Answer in brief
Three spin-allowed d–d bands for octahedral Ni(II), d⁸: ν₁ ³A₂g → ³T₂g; ν₂ ³A₂g → ³T₁g(F); ν₃ ³A₂g → ³T₁g(P).
