MO diagram of NO: why NO⁺ has a shorter bond and higher stretching frequency
Draw the molecular orbital energy-level diagram of $\ce{NO}$. Using it, explain why $\ce{NO}$ is paramagnetic, and why $\ce{NO+}$ has a shorter bond and a higher N–O stretching frequency than $\ce{NO}$, whereas $\ce{NO-}$ has a longer bond.
Syllabus: Common to CSE Paper I, IFoS Paper I and Geo-Scientist Mains (inorganic): molecular orbital theory of heteronuclear diatomic molecules.
