Diborane: structure, three-centre two-electron bonds, and its reactions with NH₃ and CO
Describe the structure of diborane (B2H6) and explain its bonding in terms of three-centre two-electron bonds. Why are the bridging B–H bonds longer than the terminal ones? Why is diborane called an electron-deficient molecule? Give the products of its reaction with (i) excess NH3 at low temperature, and what happens on heating, and (ii) CO under pressure.
Syllabus: Common to CSE Paper I, IFoS Paper I and Geo-Scientist Mains (inorganic): chemistry of main group elements, boranes, electron-deficient compounds and multicentre bonding.
