Q12(d). Carbonyl electronic transitions
Distinguish n→π* and π→π* transitions of a carbonyl compound, including the effect of increasing solvent polarity.
Answer in brief
n→π* is generally weaker and at longer wavelength; π→π* is stronger and at shorter wavelength. Polar solvents commonly shift the former blue and the latter red.
