Q1(b). Units of attraction parameter
Question
The pressure correction in the van der Waals equation is n²a/V². Find the SI unit of a.
Answer in brief
a has SI unit Pa m⁶ mol⁻²=kg m⁵ s⁻² mol⁻².
Key points
- Since the correction is added to pressure, an²/V² must have units of pascal.
- Therefore [a]=[p][V]²/[n]²=Pa(m³)²/mol².
- Using 1 Pa=1 kg m⁻¹ s⁻² gives the equivalent base-unit expression. The mole factor must be retained because n is amount of substance.
