Q1(f). Entropy on doubling volume
Question
Find the molar entropy change in SI units when the volume of any ideal gas doubles at constant temperature.
Answer in brief
ΔSₘ=Rln 2=5.763 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹.
Key points
- Along an isothermal reversible reference path, dS=δ qᵣₑᵥ/T=p dV/T=nR dV/V.
- Integrating and dividing by n gives ΔSₘ=Rln (V₂/V₁)=8.314ln 2.
- The result is positive and independent of gas identity.
