Q1(n). Bohr quantisation from matter waves
Question
Use electron wave properties to derive Bohr' s angular-momentum postulate L=mₑvr=nħ for a circular hydrogen-atom orbit.
Answer in brief
A standing wave requires 2π r=nλ; with λ=h/(mₑv) this gives mₑvr=nh/(2π)=nħ.
Key points
- An electron wave around a closed orbit must join continuously with itself after one circumference. Constructive self-interference requires an integer number of wavelengths, n=1,2,….
- Combining 2π r=nλ with the de Broglie relation p=mₑv=h/λ gives 2π rp=nh.
- Hence the orbital angular momentum is L=rp=nħ.
