Q1(j). Zero-order half-life
Question
Define a zero-order reaction and show that its half-life is proportional to initial reactant concentration.
Answer in brief
For -d[A]/dt=k, t_(1/2)=[A]₀/(2k).
Key points
- A zero-order reaction has a rate independent of reactant concentration within the applicable regime.
- Integrating d[A]=-kdt gives [A]ₜ=[A]₀-kt. Setting [A]ₜ=[A]₀/2 gives the stated half-life.
- Thus doubling the initial concentration doubles the half-life at fixed k.
